Facts in History 17th July

In 1603 James IV of Scotland was crowned James I of England. This marked the beginning of the Stuart era and it unified the Scottish and English crowns. As a consequence, this brought close ties between the two countries.

In 1666 The Great Fire of London led to new building regulations and the creation of modern fire techniques which came in place in July 17th 1667.

The death of William Makepeace Thackeray July 17th 1863. He is most famous for writing “Vanity Fair “. His works often provided “keen insights into the human condition, coupled with a biting critique of social pretensions and hypocrisy”.

The Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. Fought during World War One between the Allis and Germany it was remembered for its brutal conditions and immense causalities.

The Representation of The People Act in 1918. This act granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met minimum property qualifications and to all men over the age of 21. Leaders like Emmaline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett played crucial roles in raising awareness of women’s rights and the change in the law.
