Guy Fawkes Night 5th Nov
Guy Fawkes night is celebrated to remember the failure of the gunpowder plot. On November 5th 1605 a group of Catholic conspirators, led by Robert Catesby and including Guy Fawkes, tried to assassinate the protestant king James 1st by blowing up the Houses of Parliament in London. Their goal was to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. Guy Fawkes was caught guarding the barrels of gunpowder in the cellars beneath the House of Lords.
When news reached the people of the foiling of the plot celebratory bonfires were lit. Eventually Parliament passed the Observance of 5th November Act (or Thanksgiving Act) making the date an official annual day of thanksgiving.
Over the centuries it has become a time for large bonfires, firework displays, sparklers and the burning of the “guy”.
