International Plasma Awareness Week 6th-10th October

International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW) is held annually in the first week of October. It was launched in 2013 to raise greater awareness about the importance of donating plasma.

Plasma is part of your blood that carries platelets, red blood cell and white blood cells around the body. Plasma makes up approximately 55% of your blood and contains, antibodies, known as immunoglobulins, which fight infection. These antibodies are made into medicines to help people with rare disease, immune disorders and genetic conditions. (NHS).

Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals, the source material for most plasma protein therapies is human plasma.

The aim of this week is to raise global awareness about source plasma collection. It is also a time to recognise the contributions of plasma donors and to saving and improving the lives of patients with rare and/or genetic conditions around the world. It is also a time to increase the understanding about lifesaving plasma protein therapies and rare diseases.
