Saint Andrews Day 30th November

Saint Andrew's Day  - 30th November

St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, he is celebrated on the 30th of November. There are two theories about how St Andrew became Scotland’s saint. One story says that St Andrew came to King Angus (a Scottish king in the 9th century) in a dream promising him victory in a battle against the English. On the day of the battle an X symbol appeared in the sky, the symbol of St Andrew. The King vowed if he won St Andrew would be made a patron saint of Scotland. They won and that is why the Scottish flag has an X shaped cross on it as St Andrews symbol.

In mythology some believe that St Andrew converted the Scythians, who lived on an island in the Black Sea, to Christianity and these are descendants of the Scottish people.

It is thought that St Andrew was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and that he had been a fisherman.

St Andrews Day is celebrated in Scotland with such dishes as Haggis (Offal and Barley) Porridge and Cullen Skunk (fish or lamb soup). Blue clothes are worn, and Scottish people also have the blue and white Scottish flag.
