Martin Luther King Day 20th January
Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader who advocated for nonviolent resistance against racial segregation in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
He was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations facilities and employment. He also an important part of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963, Martin Luther King made his famous speech “I have a dream”. It became one of the defining moments of the civil rights movement and one of the most iconic speeches in American history.
He won the Nobel Peace prize in 1964 and was assassinated in April 1968.
