Every Chinese New Year starts with a new animals' zodiac year. There are twelve Chinese zodiac animals, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. This Chinese New Year is the Snake. The Snake is associated with wisdom and intuition.
The Chinese New Year is celebrated for sixteen days from Chinese New Year’s Eve until the Lantern Festival which is on the evening of the 1st day of the first lunar month on the night of the full moon. On this day families gather for dinner and see fireworks and light lanterns.
Some of the customs of Chinese New Year are that everyone one wears new clothes especially the children. Red envelopes that are filled with money and other gifts are given.
Food that is served at Chinese New Year’s Eve are food such as Dumplings which represent wealth, Fish signifies abundance and sweet rice balls symbolise family togetherness.
Over 2 billion people celebrate Chinese New Year in some way. More Western cities such as New York, London, Vancouver and Sydney celebrate Chinese New Year.
