Black History Month

Black History Month is a celebration of the achievement in literature, music, sport, business, academia and many other areas. Here are just a handful of the heroes of Black History. 

Joe Clough was born in Jamaica and came to the UK with a Scottish doctor. In 1887 he became the first Black bus driver of a London Motorbus. 

Dame Jocelyn Barrow was part of the Windrush generation, a wave of immigrants who came to the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948-1971. Dame Jocelyn was a British educationalist, community activist and the first Black woman to be governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). 

Bishop Wilfred Wood was the Church of England’s first Black Bishop. He was the Bishop of Croydon from 1985 to 2003. He was born in Barbados and ordained there then sent to the Dioceses of London. 

Diane Abbott the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Commons. Paul Boateng the UK’s first Black cabinet minister. 

John Kent was Briton’s first Black policeman from 1835-1846. It was thought his father came to England as a slave but was then released. He married a pauper and went on to have three children, John being one of them. John became a policeman in Carlisle.
