Parkinson's Awareness 14th - 20th April
Parkinson’s disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in part of the brain. These cells produce a chemical called Dopamine. When these cells are damaged the messages between the brain and the nervous system that help control and co-ordinate body movements are impeded.
This month is an opportunity to increase awareness about the disease and its symptoms, as well as to support victims. According to Parkinson’s UK it is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and Parkinson’s disease is a condition that affects the brain and causes tremor, slow movement and stiff muscles. Other physical symptoms can be loss of balance, loss of smell, urinary incontinence, constipation and swallowing difficulties. There are more symptoms and these can be found on the NHS website.around 153,000 people in the UK are living with it today.
