Mothering Sunday 30th March

The origins of Mothering Sunday come from the Middle Ages when it was a day to honour mother churches. The mother church is where a person becomes a child of the church. On Mothering Sunday Christians have historically visited their mother church.

Mothering Sunday also coincides with Laetare Sunday also called Mid-Lent Sunday, a day of respite from fasting halfway through Lent.

In later times Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members.

Modern day Mothering Sunday is marked by family gatherings, the exchange of cards and gifts and sometimes church services celebrating the role of mothers.
