National Dog Day 26th August
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, 26th August was the date her family adopted their first dog.
The purpose was to end puppy mills and pet store sales and encourage people to rescue and adopt from local shelters.
The day also highlights the contribution of working dogs, such as military police, service dogs and advocates improved conditions and rights for dogs
Animal rights charity, the International Organisation for Animal Protection (OIPA), says: “[It is a] special day to raise awareness about dog adoption because, if you are looking for a life’s companion, shelters are full of four-legged friends who are waiting for their chance and will bring just happiness to your days.”
