World Alzheimer's Day 21st Sept

World Alzheimer’s Day

World Alzheimer’s Day is on September 21st 2026. The global theme is “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters”.

“Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, it affects us all and it devastates lives”(Alzheimer’s Society). Dementia is a group of symptoms that are caused by different diseases that damage the brain. These symptoms get worse over time. Dementia is not a natural part of aging. It is caused when a disease damages nerve cells in the brain. Each individual experiences dementia differently but there are common early sighs and symptoms.

The first symptom is memory loss with problems recalling things that happened recently. Difficulty concentrating planning or organising, for example struggling to make decisions or problem solve is another symptom. Also problems with language and communication. Misidentifying things, struggling to judge distance (such as on stairs) being confused about time or place. Mood changes or difficulty controlling emptions, for example becoming unusually anxious, irritable, sad or frightened.

There are currently around one million people in the UK living with Dementia. (Alzheimer’s Society).
