World Alzheimer's Month

World Alzheimer's Month

This month is an international campaign held every September to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, challenging stigma and promoting understanding.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour, ultimately interfering with daily tasks and quality of life.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. It is characterised by the gradual decline in cognitive functions, including memory, reasoning, and the ability to perform everyday activities. The disease typically affects individuals aged 65 and older, although early onset Alzheimer’s can occur in younger individuals.

World Alzheimer’s Month was launched in 2012 by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), building on the momentum of World Alzheimer’s Day, which was established in 1994. The initiative was created to extend the impact of awareness-raising efforts throughout the entire month of September. Since its inception, World Alzheimer’s Month has gained global recognition, with participation from hundreds of organizations and millions of people around the world.
