World Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day 14th June

The theme for this year is “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.” This is a global tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose generosity saves lives every day.

These volunteers help support patients during emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatment, childbirth and other lifelong serious conditions.

On The World Health Organisation (WHO) website it reminds us “that each donation is more than a medical act; it is a powerful expression of solidarity, compassion and collective responsibility.” The idea for the campaign is that the whole of humanity is “reflected in a single drop, and highlights how every donor helps form a lifeline that connects and protects us all.”

Blood transfusions are safer than ever but still relies on people willing to donate regularly and voluntarily. This years campaign aims to increase the numbers of regular voluntary unpaid blood donations globally. Also to raise the awareness of the life-saving impact of blood and plasma donation. The WHO want to promote the values of solidarity and humanity and highlight the vital contributions of blood donors, encourage governments and partners to “strengthen and invest in national blood programmes to achieve universal access to safe blood transfusions.”
